When to Seek an Evaluation

Driving ability can change gradually, making it difficult to recognize warning signs from the inside. If you or someone you care for is experiencing any of the following, a professional driver evaluation is a wise next step.

Driving ability can change gradually, making it difficult to recognize warning signs from the inside. If you or someone you care for is experiencing any of the following, a professional driver evaluation is a wise next step.

Recent crashes, near misses, or traffic violations

Any incident involving a collision, a close call, or a citation may indicate a change in driving ability that warrants evaluation.

Getting lost in familiar areas

Becoming disoriented on routes driven regularly can signal changes in spatial awareness or memory that affect safe navigation.

Difficulty judging gaps, distance, or speed

Misjudging the space between vehicles, at

intersections, or when merging is a significant safety risk tied to visual-perceptual changes.

Slower reaction time

Delayed responses to traffic signals, pedestrians, or unexpected hazards reduce the margin of safety available to prevent incidents.

Difficulty moving between the

accelerator and brake

Problems with foot placement or pedal transitions, including accidental acceleration, may stem from weakness, coordination changes, or confusion.

Trouble turning the head or

managing vehicle controls

Limited neck rotation, reduced grip strength, or

difficulty reaching controls can compromise

awareness and vehicle management.

Changes in vision, attention,

memory, or judgment

New or worsening deficits in any of these areas,

even when mild, can meaningfully affect the

complex task of driving.

Anxiety, confusion, or family

concern

When a driver or their family expresses worry about driving safety, it is always worth a professional evaluation to provide clarity and peace of mind.

A new medical condition, injury, or medication change

Many diagnoses and medications affect cognition, vision, or motor control. An evaluation establishes a new baseline and guides safe return to driving.

The Evaluation Process

A comprehensive driver evaluation typically spans 2.5–3.5 hours and covers every aspect of safe driving ability. Here is what to expect.

A comprehensive driver evaluation typically spans 2.5–3.5 hours and covers every aspect of safe driving ability. Here is what to expect.

We begin with a detailed discussion of your medical history, current medications, visual acuity, cognitive status, and functional mobility. Medical records are reviewed in advance.

Standardized tests evaluate vision, reaction time, range of motion, strength, coordination, and cognitive processing — the core skills required for safe vehicle operation.

You'll drive in a dual-controlled vehicle on local roads and highways. Our specialist observes your lane positioning, hazard response, and vehicle management in real-world conditions.

You receive a written evaluation report with findings, equipment recommendations, a training plan, and communication to your referring physician. Follow-up support is included.

What to Bring

Valid driver’s license or identification

Current prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses

List of medications and dosages

Physician referral (if required by insurance)

Mobility aid (wheelchair, walker, cane) if applicable

Important Reminders

Do not drive yourself to the evaluation

Arrive well-rested; avoid alcohol and sedating medications

Wear comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear

Plan for approximately 3 hours for the full evaluation

Owner & Lead Rehabilitation Specialist

Hello, and welcome! I founded Safe Driving Solutions, LLC with the belief that conversations about driving should be approached with empathy, respect, and a commitment to helping individuals maintain independence whenever possible.

As an Occupational Therapist and Driving Rehabilitation Professional, I work with teens and adults whose medical conditions, developmental differences, or life changes may affect driving performance.

I understand that concerns about driving can bring uncertainty and anxiety. My goal is to provide objective evaluations, practical recommendations, and a supportive experience that helps individuals and families feel informed and empowered.

Every person brings unique strengths, challenges, and life experiences. I believe those differences deserve to be met with patience, dignity, and compassion.

It is a privilege to partner with families, physicians, and healthcare providers in promoting safe community mobility and helping individuals remain engaged in the activities that matter most to them.
